The bald eagle is part of the Falconiformes order and the Accipitridae family of birds. Falconiformes are diurnal birds of prey. The Accipitridae family includes eagles, harriers, vultures, kites, hawks and eagles. There are about 60 eagle species.
The order of Falconiformes includes predatory birds with hooked bills and talons. Other species in this order include the Cooper's hawk, Ferruginous hawk, golden eagle, northern harrier, red-tailed hawk, rough-legged hawk, sharp-shinned hawk and Swainson's hawk.
Bald eagles are in the genus Haliaeetus, which includes the African fish eagle, Madagascar fish eagle, Pallas' sea eagle, Sandford's sea eagle, the white-bellied sea eagle and the white-tailed sea eagle. The white-tailed sea eagle is the bald eagle's closest relative.
